For 48 years, I’ve longed for the day I could retire. Now it’s arrived, I’m not sure how I feel. Had I been working in an office (Bank) I’d have been like “Bye! See yas!” ![]()
But I’ve already done that.
Had I been working with a ‘friend’ and invested in his business, I’d have been like “F*** off ya scheming, two-faced, lousy , money-grabbing b******!”
Today though, I take my last dog-walk, 17 years and 3 months after setting up my wee Leading Petcare business. It was the first of its kind in the area.
Over that 17.25 years, I’ve taken only 25 weeks holiday. Only half a day was lost to being unwell, too. (Since neither my Critical Illness Insurers nor the Government count Cardiac Arrest as a qualifying illness, then neither am I – seems I was sick, but not sick enough, and dead, but not dead enough.
)
. So I make that, overall, @ 4,300 working days. On average, I walked about nine miles a day (conservative estimate.)
. That’s 38,700 miles.
. That’s the equivalent of walking 1.55 times round the world at the equator … though I can assure you, the weather was nothing similar. ![]()
. During that time, I’ve worn through 42 pairs of walking boots. And a similar number of shorts / trousers.
. Roughly, I’ll have gone through over 860 boxes of dog biscuits, and in the region of 2k … yes, that’s 2,000 packets of meat strips! (Well, the dogs have, though I may have sneaked a few biscuits in desperate moments of hunger.
)
. I haven’t even considered putting a number on the times I’ve picked up, wiped up, cleaned up various animal poo! ![]()
. Throughout the years of Leading Petcare, I’ve cared for not only dogs, but cats, rabbits, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, a chinchilla, cockatiels, parrots, budgies, hens, bearded dragon, geckos, tortoise, tropical fish and pond fish.
. During my 48-year working life, I’ve had a couple of 18 inch machetes brandished at me; a gun pointed at my face from 10 feet away; been threatened by dodgy gangster-looking solicitors. I’ve evacuated a staff from a burning office, searching through smoke-filled corridors and toilets. I’ve rescued and untangled a ram from a wire fence, been surrounded by, threatened, jostled and chased by cattle, dive bombed by buzzards and crapped on by a squirrel in a tree.
. I’ve been privileged to spend so much time in the company of wonderful animals.
Now I’ve done all that, too.
It’s been a total blast! I’ve loved it!
And I’m not sure how I feel.

Thank you Kevin. Yeah – I really will, though several of them live locally so I’ll no doubt bump into them from time to time.

Thanks MJ – you know, I don’t think our wee cats would be too amused sharing theuir territory with a dog. And anyway – that would just be like anever ending continuation of my work, wouldn’t it? 😉

Cheers Kenny – I’ve been very lucky. With the exception of a few years in Banking, I’ve been involved in interesting and pretty fun work all my days. I am looking forward though to having more time to try writing and will also attempt to learn how to play guitar! 🙂

Thanks Esther – hopefully I’ll find more time to get more regular with my blog posting and also make a move on my own book writing. 🙂

I will, for sure. But the bonus is, I can let the neighbours hear my record collection, turned up to 11, all day long. They WILL get to like Rory Gallagher, punk and reggae! 😉

It’s bittersweet I’m sure. But think of all the wonderful stories you can tell in retirement…
