I have to say I’m not really one for watching television these days. In part, this is simply down to having other leisure interests I’d rather spend time on: my own involvement with sport; writing (my blogs and books); listening to the radio / my record and CD collection, and reading.
I find too much of present day television ‘celebrity’ centered for my liking. ‘Celebrity’ Big Brother; ‘Celebrity’ Dancing on Ice; ‘Celebrity’ SAS (Who Dares Wins) etc, etc, which really ticks me off – and bores me senseless.
And don’t start me on the biggest pile of poo ever allowed on television – The Masked Singer. There’s even a Masked Dancer, I see.
Give me strength!
I have zero idea who the ‘celebrities’ are that appear on these shows; seems to me they are ‘celebrities’ because they were once on a reality show … and those are even more piles of complete doo-doo!
Sorry. I kinda went off on one, there, didn’t I? I digress.
I do watch a lot of sport on TV, I’ll grant you. And cartoons. But I must be one of only a very few people to have never watched a whole episode of ‘Friends,’ for example. Or ‘Game of Thrones.‘
When it comes to movies, I’d say I watch even less. My wife and I did go to see the film about Bob Marley, ‘One Love,’ the other night. I certainly enjoyed that, being a huge fan of the man and his music. But that was my first time in a cinema for over a year.
Films on TV don’t tend to hold my attention either. I’ll end up finding a baseball game or an episode of ‘Futurama‘ on my tablet and popping my earphones in. The last movie I recall sitting all the way through (and it was truly gripping / horrific) was 1917, a couple of years ago.
So, when I’m asked ‘what movies or TV series have you watched more than five times?’ you know this is going to be a short post!
Films first: I’ve racked my brain and while there are a few movies I’ve enjoyed enormously, I can’t honestly say I’ve had the inclination to watch them more than two or three times. Falling into this category would be; The Blues Brothers; Little Shop of Horrors; Ghostbusters and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
There are only three however, I’ve definitely watched more than five times: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Blazing Saddles and The Life of Brian.
With regard to the small screen, there are many programmes from back in the day that I really enjoyed. I even bought the series on DVD … most of which remain unopened! Even had I watched them, there are so many episodes, I’d find it impossible, simply from a time perspective, to watch any series more than five times.
There is one, though – one I’ve watched so often, I know most of the scripts per verbatim. (There were only ever two series of six (half hour) episodes ever aired, which helps, of course.)
It never fails to make me laugh,: FAWLTY TOWERS.
The comedic timing; the delivery; the visual expressions; the one-liners; the slapstick … everything! It’s priceless. Perfection. Genius.
Yup – that’s about it:
Faultless Fawlty Towers.

FT is so funny! Great stuff. I agree with you on the shows that are “hits” today. What the hell is so appealing about the Masked Singer anyway?!?

There’s some amount of dross on TV these days – but The Masked Singer is rank, rock bottom. The pits.
