You gotta start somewhere, right?

The start of something small.

How do you celebrate some sort of achievement without coming across all cocky and conceited? Or worse – without trundling out that dreadful ‘dreams come true with hard work and persistence’ crap?

I know – I’ll do it the Glasgow way. I mean, it’s no biggie; it’s not like it’s going to change my life or whatever. But it is pretty cool, I think.

See – I’ve just signed my first ‘writer for hire’ contract. Well, two actually. This has nothing to do with the books I’m presently working on. Nor is this connected to my various blogs either.

No. A publisher (like a bona fide publisher, not one of the many ‘vanity publishers’ who require the author to show faith in their work by splitting the costs) has asked me to produce TWO humorous ‘gift’ books.

My samples have been approved and I’m now working towards a 29th July deadline for completion. (Eek!)

For this, I will be paid money. Proper, shopping and heating-bills type money. Who’d have thought, eh?!!

OK, as it’s a contracted job, I’m writing to order and in a form that the publishers require. I’ll have to forfeit copyright to them, which I believe is common practice. And as an effective ‘ghost writer’ I may not even be credited as the author, though we’re discussing this possibility. But for the opportunity to become involved in a project such as this, I’m certainly not complaining.

I’ll not name the publisher or the nature of these books at the moment, for fear of putting the kibosh on them – but I’ll update any progress as and when there’s something to report. Oh, you better believe it!

It’s a small start, I know. But gosh! It’s exciting.

It just goes to show – dreams come ……

    • Thanks – I now know the book will appear in the name of a pseudonym used by the publisher as they have already produced a series in that name and the retailers trust the ‘name’ and its sales success.

      Hey ho!

I’m, just chuffed they approached me and considered I could maintain the sales levels.

      🙂

    • Cheers Kenny – it’s not a big sum by any means. But the old Corinthian spirit of my amateur athletics days still burns brightly and just the kudos of ‘success’ / selection is fine by me. 🙂

    • Thanks Esther
It’s not a book of fiction or even a biography type like my WIP ’70s book. It’s something I’d never even considered, so I’m flattered they even approached me in the first place. 🙂

  1. Thanks Esther. Appreciated.
(This is just the Glasgow way – we know deep down we are cocky and confident, but just don’t like others to perceive us that way. 😉 And by playing things down / glass half empty etc, we are prepared for the worst if and when inevitably it does happen. 😀 )
