The Beatles – please tell me I’m not alone!

Perhaps I should mention, for the benefit of those who don’t know me: it’s not in my nature to be deliberately confrontational, but I’m proud to be non-conventional. I think this results from being Scottish; old; grumpy, and a martyr to ‘small man syndrome.’ I’m also an ageing punk, rocking a dodgy mohawk hairstyle . (Form an orderly queue, ladies! 😀 )

I’m comfortable being ‘different.’ I don’t go with the flow.

So, here’s the thing.

I don’t ‘get’ The Beatles. Never have.

I don’t mind them. They’re all right. I think they were definitely onto something back in the day. However, I wonder if their fandom was as much down to them being the first with a shrewd and clever marketing team / press backing who promoted their notoriety for sporting novelty ‘moptop’ hairstyles.

You saw just a few years later, what the media and a few strips of tartan did for the popularity of The Bay City Rollers.

Now, as far as I can see, we don’t revere my fellow Scots in the same manner as The Beatles, do we? (Yeah, OK – I suppose even ‘I Am The Walrus‘ has more cultural significance than ‘Shang-A-Lang,‘ so perhaps that has something to do with it.)

Anyway, as The Beatles’ popularity grew, I feel their story became much like that of The Emperor’s New Clothes, in that nobody wanted to call them out for fear of being ostracized themselves.

Sure, they wrote and recorded some great songs. But so did The Kinks. Led Zeppelin wrote a few decent tunes, as did Gilbert O’Bloody Sullivan 😉 . But does that really make them the best band ever? Are they still revered to this day because it’s the ‘done thing’ to do?

Sorry – just sayin’.

  1. The Beatles had great songs. They also had trash songs, like any band. I support your right to have an opinion, brother. Until just recently, I thought the Bay City Rollers were from San Francisco.

  2. Marketing is part of the art nowadays and we don’t mind. That’s the grounding of art. And the Beatles and their manager did it well.
