What do I enjoy most about writing? Well, certainly not the pain-in-the-butt marketing and promotion process that follows the words ‘THE END.’ 😉
Despite the frustration and angst that brings, I still come back for more. Why? Not because I view writing as an opportunity to make money (which is just as well) but just for the enjoyment it brings.
It’s also a good excuse not to go work in the garden with my wife.
“Sorry, dear – I have some important writing that must be completed today.“
I do find fun in playing about with words. Maybe I’m odd, but I love editing! Well, to a point. It’s almost cathartic, reducing a word count to within a stipulated maximum, yet not diluting the content detail.
I get that warm, smug feeling only a indie writer can appreciate. 🙂
I don’t write anything serious; nothing deep and thoughtful really. My writing is rather shallow in emotion, generally speaking. I like to think I produce a light, fun read in most of what I come up with. (This post may well contradict that last statement, now that I’ve said it.)
What I enjoy the absolute most, then, is writing something I think may make someone else, perhaps on the other side of the world, smile. Or laugh, even.
Billy Connolly once said the best type of comedy is when you can’t actually see the result … you can only imagine the reaction. And I agree.
Were I to do a ‘stand-up’ routine in front of an expectant audience, maybe I would hear the crowd’s adulation through prolonged laughs and applause. I could gauge the reaction by the cries of “Encore! Encore!” and sight of the promoter in the wings hastily drafting out an improved contract for my next UK tour.
Or … there could be tumbleweed. And silence.
Writing though? I’ll never know. And being an eternal optimist, I’ll convince myself my books and blog posts do raise a smile.
(Of course, it would be nice if you’d confirm this by ‘Liking / subscribing / sharing’ this post … and news of my latest book, ‘A SPACE HOPPER KILLED MY HAMSTER … amusing tales of growing up in the ’60s & ’70s.)
