Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray! It’s a Holi, Holiday!

Ah, right .. I see. It’s ‘holiday’ as in the Americanization of the word, we’re talking about. I was just about to regale y’all with tales of this year’s trip to India, but they’ll keep for later in the week.

So here’s the thing. Now I’m retired, every day’s a ‘holiday.’ And conversely, during my eighteen years of self-employment, NO day was a ‘holiday.’ Other than taking a fortnight’s annual vacation, I worked every day. Every, Single. Day.

In fact, with the rest of the country away from home for whatever reason, the traditional holiday dates of Easter and Christmas were my busiest. (I cared for and visited family pets during their owners’ absence.)

And prior to running my own business, I worked in Branch Banking for twenty-eight years. Sure, we’d have the traditional Bank Holiday Mondays off as a statutory holiday dates. However, in those pre-internet banking days, that only made the days immediately before and following so incredibly busy were too stressed / depressed to enjoy the day itself. It just wasn’t worth the hassle.

‘Holidays’ then, apart from my vacation dates, have meant little to me during my adult, working life. But if I had to plump for my ‘favourite,’ it was then and is now, the May and August Bank Holiday Weekends.

A little odd? Random? Perhaps.

Nowadays, the May weekend is filled with top class, exciting sport. Traditionally, it’s just about the end of the football season here in UK and the weekend is filled with Play-off finals at different levels. Rugby League (another favourite of mine) tends to feature local rivalries and ‘derby’ matches. The cricket season will be in full swing. Tennis too.

And then, the August weekend has historically provided for large outdoor music festivals, some of which even attract television coverage.

Those two days feel ‘different.’

As they most certainly were in my youth, when I enjoyed the atmosphere of the days from a distance. I’ve never been into violence – I’m too much of a scaredy-cat! But I do like my music. And I do love youth culture and music culture. And I like to see a bit of ‘chaos,’ if truth be told – so long as I’m not directly involved and in my bed for 10pm!

So when the evening news on May and August Bank Holiday Mondays reported on ‘rumbles in Brighton’ and Mods and Rockers clashing in Clacton, or wherever, it always fascinated me … from five hundred miles away.

I know – it’s a pretty lame reason for nominating my ‘favourite holiday,’ but if it helps validate my choice, the weather’s usually half decent then too. 😉🤣
